PROGRAM NOTES
The expressive content of Adagio Assai can be likened to a ‘lament’, manifesting great grief, but in an unobtrusive manner. As the title suggests, the tempo of the piece very slowly gives each note a high degree of significance.

The material for the piece is based on a series where quarter tones are mixed with whole and half tones. The series of tones is derived from the ‘multiphonics’ which provide the ‘harmonics’ for the piece.

First performance: given by Italian saxophonist David Brutti during the course of the Festival SituAzioni 2012 in Umbria, Italy.

PROGRAM NOTES
The First piece for alto Saxophone is dedicated to Lars-Göran Ulander, an influential musician in free-form jazz in Sweden.

Links to the genre of jazz occur, such as choice of tone series and intervals. A celebratory reference to the American saxophonist Steve Coleman is also hidden within the work. The piece mixes the strictly formal with a Dionysian form of expression.

First performance: given by Italian saxophonist David Brutti during the course of the Festival SituAzioni 2012 in Umbria, Italy.
